In a technical sense, Antietam caused the invading Army of Northern Virginia to retreat from its already launched invasion of the North.

Lee tried to invade the North twice.

The first time, in September 1862, he was stopped at Sharpsburg/Antietam.

The second time, in July 1863, he was stopped at Gettysburg.
