James Monroe had only two daughters, Eliza and Maria Hester. Eliza was educated in private French schools and married a prominent Virginia attorney who became a federal judge. She often served as the White House hostess for her father since Mrs. Monroe was in poor health . She was not popular in the Washington social set. Her husband died, she moved to France became a Catholic and entered a convent.
