In 1903, in Warren, Onio, he formed his own maple sugar business which became the largest producer of maple sugar in the world. He sold the business in 1909. In 1911, he began to produce chocolate candy under the company name of the Queen Victoria Chocolate Company. After he sold his Lifesavers creation, he went on, in 1916 and started the Crane Chocolate Company.

Why is there a hole in a lifesaver?
Life Savers were invented in 1912 by Clarence Crane. Originally a chocolate salesman, Crane wanted to invent a product marketable in the summer when chocolate sales were slow due to its propensity for melting. Crane wanted to counter the pillow-shaped mints that were being imported from Europe at the time, so he hired a pill maker to make him a peppermint that was round and flat. The mints he produced had a hole in the middle that caused them to resemble life preservers that are thrown from a boat to save someone from drowning…and so the Life Savers brand was born!

Clarence Crane was a chocolate maker and chocolate was hard to sell in the summer months so he decided to try to make a mint to boost his summertime sales. In 1912 he sold "Crane's Peppermint Life Savers" In 1913 he sold the rights to his candy to Edward Noble for 2,900.00. The reason he put the hole in the center was life preservers were just starting to be used on ships to toss to passengers who had fallen overboard. Crane also saw a pill making machine at a druggist that was operated by hand and made round flat pills. Putting together "life preservers" with the pill making machine adding the hole made his mints "life preservers". By 2004 the candy was owned by Kraft foods and made into many flavors.
