In 1905, when the Japanese Navy defeated the superior Russian force at the Battle of Tsushima in the Korean Strait, the Japanese realized that Europeans were no longer to be feared.

Simply put, it was the beginning of Japanese Imperialism which ultimately led to the capturing of European colonies and controlled territories in the eastern Pacific early in WWII, and also the invasion of China and the Korean peninsula.
