After the reign of King Solomon, the Kingdom of Israel was split into two kingdoms, Israel and Judah in about 930 BCE. The Northern Kingdom, Israel, was destroyed and its people taken into exile in 721 BCE; they never returned and are known as The Lost Tribes of Israel. Somewhat later, in 597 BCE, many people from Judah, the Southern Kingdom, were exiled to Babylon, and returned to Judea about 70 years later. It was from these people of "Judea" that the "Jews" descended.
