No boat blew up to start the Viet War. But if any did, it was a North Vietnamese Navy torpedo boat (P4 model) from their 135th Torpedo Squadron when they attacked the US destroyer USS Maddox on 02 August 1964; the Maddox did claim one boat destroyed.
However, there was ONE boat that blew up and started a war. The battleship USS Maine exploded in Havana Harbor starting the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Splendid Little War only lasted 6 months; it was the 1890s version of the 1991 Operation Desert Storm which was nicknamed the "100 Hour War."
