I would say that if you're Canadian, you should support your own troops by joining the Canadian military, and if you're British you should join the British Forces.

To become a Canadian soldier, you must first live in the country of Canada and living there legally. Then you must apply to be a soldier in the Canadian forces. If you pass all the fields you should be okay to be a soldier.

A course that tou should take before you go into the military is JROTC. You should also take the ASVAB which is the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. This tells the military what you will be good as in the military. You should also go to college so you can go in as an officer.
If you mean is joining the US Navy hard then not really. It is just as hard as joining any other military branch. As long as you are physically and mentally healthy you should be fine. No criminal record and no drugs in system.

Unless you're a dual citizen you don't have a choice - you need to be a citizen of the country to serve in its military. The above is actually only true in regards to the Canadian Forces - they require you to be a Canadian citizen. You can join the US military as a foreign citizen, provided you've established permanent residence in the US, and have declared an intent to become a US citizen.
