The original Spanish Horse, the PRE - Pura Raza Española - originates in Spain. It is a foundation horse in many breeds across Europe and the rest of the world, and, has had an influence on some horses in America. There are two recognised foundation breeds that come from the Iberian Peninsula - the PRE and the PSL,( Pura Sangue Lusitano,) from Portugal. The Andalusian is not a breed - it is a 'type' - and a term applied generally by people when referring to horses from the Iberian Peninsula. America has established an Andalusian registry that includes part bred PREs. Also coming from the Spanish ancestry are Aztecas, Spanish Norman horses and the mustangs, as well as genetically researched herds such as the Shackleford Banks horses, the oldest documented horse population in North America who are shown to have descended directly from the spanish horses. Separate to the PRE are Spanish Arabs. There are international registries for Part Bred Spanish horses , such as the Hispano Arab - PRE crossed with Arab. Andalusian or Lippizzaner. Andalusians are typically considered the Spanish version of the Portuguese Lusitano. A Spanish barb is a horse that can trace it's origins back to both Iberian stock and Barbary stock. The Barbary horses (Barbs) were crossed with Iberian stock (Andalusian, Lusitanos, sorrias etc) and the resulting foals had certain desired qualities. These horses were taken all over the world by Spanish Explorers and are at the foundation of many breeds throughout the world.
The Spanish originally used Andalusian, Lusitano, Spanish Barb, Jennet and Sorraia horses. All of these breeds are considered Iberian due to the location of the creation.
When the Spanish began to explore North America they brought Sorraia (often confused for Andalusian or Lusitanos), Jennets, and the occasional Spanish barb. This stock was the foundation for the Paso Fino and the American Mustang among other breeds.
The Lipizzaner is the horse used in the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
