The word "sporting dog" refers to a dog in the Sporting Group (usually of the American Kennel Club). The breeds in the Sporting Group can generally be further classified into four groups, including Retrievers, Setters, Pointers and Spaniels.

The American Kennel Club recognizes seven groups of dogs: Working, Herding, Sporting, Non-Sporting, Terrier, Toy and Hound. Within these seven groups there are many breeds. There are also many breeds of dogs that have been around for decades (even centuries) that are not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
Sporting dogs were often bred to bring back game. This resulted in several well known breeds such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers and Irish Water Spaniels.

Most toy dogs do not like to swim. Also some herding breeds do not like to either. Also some non-sporting breeds. Also terriers most of the time aren't much of swimmers.
Beagles are hunting dogs so they are classified as Sporting Dogs.

This is a pretty open-ended question because there are hundreds of recognized breeds and thousands that span the world. They can be hounds (sight or scent), working, toy, sporting, non-sporting and many in between.
Terriers
There are over 300 dog breeds in the world total, and using the American Kennel Club grouping system, they areseparatedinto seven groups; Terriers, sporting, hounds, non-sporting, working, herding and toys.
In dog shows poodles are classed as Non-Sporting. This is a catch-all for various breeds that do not fit into such basic categories as working dogs, Hound Group, terriers, etc. Bulldogs are also classed as Non-Sporting.
Sporting dogs are dogs who have been bread for hunting. Some breeds include: pointer spaniel setter retriever Notice that these terms are general. Since there are many types of each. Almost all pointers and spaniels are sporting dogs. An irish setter or a chesapeake bay retriever are common types as well.
