The 'millennium bug'. When computers started to be manufactured - no-one gave any thought to the way the internal clock chip functioned. Those older chips only stored the year with the last two digits. Many 'experts' predicted that computers would fail when the year passed at midnight on 31st December 1999. A simple software fix was made available over the internet, and in the vast majority of cases - the new millennium started without problems. Once the 'problem' came to light - manufacturers started producing computers that used the full four-digit number to represent the year. If you're wondering what will happen in the year 10,000 - don't worry - scientists reckon we won't be around then - as the sun will have expanded to a red-giant - wiping out all life on earth !
