When it comes to burning calories, your heart rate is much more important than what it is that you are doing.

If you can reach and sustain the same heart rate for the same amount of time you will burn pretty much the same amount of calories regardless of activity.

Sprinting would get your heart rate up higher than running, so for the same period of time, sprinting would burn more calories.

If you measure by distance instead, it's usually pretty much a draw. Sprinting use more calories by time, but you travel faster, so you're done sooner. Running use less calories by time, but you need to keep at it longer.

Most people woulds use up more calories by running, because they're able to keep at it longer.
