Monitors receive video (picture) signals from a PC via either a VGA (or S-VGA) cable or a DVI cable. VGA stands for Video Graphics Array. VGA cables drive analog monitors, which could be the older CRT monitors or newer flat-panel displays. The VGA cable at the monitor side is often hard-wired in. At the end that will plug into the PC is a male, 15-pin "D-sub" plug. The pins are in 3 rows of 5. S-VGA is Super VGA, the current, extended version of the original VGA. VGA cables usally have black or blue connectors. DVI is Digital Visual Interface, a digital connection standard for computers and projectors. It can carry an uncompressed digital video signal, and it can actually carry an analog signal at the same time. The DVI cable usually has two male ends, which plug into identical sockets on the PC and the monitor. These plugs come in various pin configurations for different purposes but can be recognized by their two different sections: a tab, possibly surrounded by 4 pins, at one end, and the larger part with an 8 x 3 pin pattern, which may be only partially filled. DVI cables often have white connectors. Some monitors can have additional connections to the PC for other reasons. * Some monitors, flat panels in particular, offer integrated USB ports, which can be used for any USB device but which are most often used for a USB-connected keboard, mouse, or flash drive. Connecting a USB cable from this monitor to the PC extends the USB interface to the monitor. * If a monitor has built-in or attached speakers, a wire from the monitor (or its speakers) will connect to the PC's speaker port (an eighth-inch socket). You also need an A/C power cord, from the monitor to the wall power outlet.

Note: Early computers used older graphics standards called CGA and EGA. But just about any PC made since 1990 will connect to its monitor via S-VGA or DVI. Some PCs come with both ports and can use either monitor or even both at once.

How do you hook up your IBM laptop to an external monitor?

If the IBM laptop you use has a VGA port you just connect your monitor cable directly to the port. Then turn on the laptop and it should install the drivers needed to use the external monitor automatically. If you laptop does not have a VGA port then you will need a "Laptop replica port" to add the VGA port so you can connect the monitor.

If a laptop Monitor breaks is there a way to replace it without buying a whole new laptop and if so how much money would it cost to replace or fix?

If the laptop is no longer under warranty, the cost of fixing the monitor would likely be more than the cost of the laptop. However, you can connect the laptop to any desktop monitor, you just need to buy a simple connector you can get at most any computer store, and you could also buy a used desktop monitor for very little.

Why does laptop say you have 2monitor's?

difult monitor and external monitor Because you probably have the connection (and ability to operate) a second monitor built in to the laptop. Check the plugs on the side of the laptop, there is no doubt a plug for an additional monitor.
