The GTO is considered the 1st mainly because of how Popular it was and how well it sold. If you really look at the history of American performance cars, Most Muscle car experts would actually say that the first Muscle car was the 1949 Oldsmobiles "Rocket" 88. There were many cars before the GTO that were High powered and even faster than the GTO. Same with the "Pony car", Most say it was the Ford Mustang and they would be Wrong... The Plymouth Barracuda came out first... The Mustang Just Sold ALOT.
The first mustangs are model year 1964
GTO,Camaro, Corvette, Trans Am,Firebird, Mustang
Ford! He had to come up with something to compete with the '63 1/2 Mustang Pony car.
First came out in 1964
The first year for the GTO was 1964.
1964 1/2 was the first official model year.
No, Mustang wheels will not fit a GTO the bolt pattern is 5 x 120.65 mm (4.75 inches) on a GTO; it's 5 x 114.3 (4.5 inches) on '94-up Mustangs. Prior to that, the Mustang had a 4-bolt setup. Lastly, the wheel offset is different on each car (offset might be cured with spacers, but it's a mute point with the difference in bolt spacing).
1964. It is argued that the 1964 GTO was the first muscle car.
High Output know that GTO stands for? grand turisimo omilligato
Popular.. GTO was the first Popular Muscle car.. normally referred to as the first when it actually wasn't. First Mustang was the Most popular, which the Pony car was named after, even though it wasn't the first either, Plymouth Barracuda was the first. Chevelles/ impala SS/ camaro/nova road runners/ GTX/ Superbees/ barracuda/challenger/dart Ford Galaxie/ torino/ mustang AMC Rebel/ AMX/ Javelin Pontiac GTO , Superduty, Trans-am are a few.
the mustang came out in 1964 and the camaro was Chevy's answer to the pony car in 1967. so, unfortunately the mustang did. but, when the camaro came out, it beat the hell outta the mustang in every IROC race there after for a few years running. If it wasent for Carroll shelby and jack roush's mustang add on's. the mustang would still be second place.
