How does gear ratio relate to speed and torque?

in simplest terms, gear ratio is all about leverage

the same concept that makes a larger lever able to apply more force while moving a longer distance applies to gears. instead of comparing the length of the lever, you compare the size of the gears or number of teeth (which is the same as a measure of size if teeth are the same size since we are looking for a ratio or fraction)

the size of one gear in relation to the other is a "gear ratio". if gear A has 40 teeth and gear B has 10 teeth, the ratio is 4:1.

for gear A to go a complete revolution it went through 40 teeth, and if gear B went for a complete revolution it went through 10. what does this mean? it means if they are paired together--let's say gear A turning gear B--then for every turn of A, gear B turns 4 times.

how does this relate to speed and torque? well in the scenario above, gear B is turning 4 times as fast as gear A but with 1/4 of the torque or turning force (of course there are factors that influence this and there is more to it, but let's keep it simple to explain the relationship).

this is easiest to see/understand in a bicycle. when you small gear in back (wheel) versus a large gear, pedaling is "harder". the smaller the gear, the more the end of the wheel has leverage over it, however the smaller the gear, the less pedaling it takes to turn the wheel a full turn.... if you go to a larger gear in back it will take more pedals to turn the wheel but feel easier because you have increased your mechanical advantage on the ground.

in an automotive transmission, the input of the transmission can be equated to engine RPM (for this example) and the output can be equated to wheel speed (in this example), in 1st gear the output gear is larger than the input gear. this means that the wheels will turn less than the engine.... you will go 'slow' even with high RPM but you have more torque so you can start the car from a stop or go up a hill.... in the highest gear the output gear is smaller than the input, this means that for every turn of the engine the wheels will turn several times (this is called overdrive)... once you are already moving at a high speed you don't need as much TORQUE to keep the car going so you sacrifice torque in higher gears to gain speed and keep your engine RPM down.

if you are asking in regards to a differential gear ratio (like performance vs. stock) it's the same idea. the differential is just another gearset, like in the transmission, but this one can't be shifted. so if you have a differential that's lower geared you will have more torque at any given RPM but to go at a given speed your engine will have to turn faster than with a higher geared differential. in theory this will lower your top speed.

if you go with a higher gearset you will have less torque in any given gear, but will have a higher speed at any given engine RPM vs the lower geared set. -Ramsey Mesyef

How much is an original hot wheels car worth?

If it is original from the 1960's and early 1970's in an unopened box it could bring thousands of dollars. Boxes were stamped with names of the cars inside and that would effect the value, too. If it's from the 1990's to present you would be lucky to get the retail value of about $1 per car.

How To

How to Remove rear seat 1970 gto?

There are two "clips" that the seat spring framework hook into that hold it in place, at the bottom of the seat. To remove push down and back toward the back of the car (hard) on the bottom of the seat near where it meets the floor, and lift up when you feel them disengauge. They are located under the back seat on the floor behind the front seats. If you put your hand onder the seat you will be able to feel their location. Do one side at a time. No tools are reqired to get the lower part of the seat out, the upper part of the seat back clips in at the top and bolts down at the bottom. It is a simple process but requires a good bit of muscle to get them out.

How do you fix a poor acceleration and idling problem?

I experienced poor acceleration in my '95 Chevy blazer, which eventually became so severe that when accelerating, the engine nearly stalled. It turned out that my catalytic converter was disintegrating, and choking off the exhaust so severely that the backpressure was causing engine retardation. I took the vehicle to a muffler shop, where they performed a backpressure test on the exhaust to diagnose the problem. After replacing the catalytic converter, the problem was corrected.

What years body frames will work for a 66 GTO and where is a source for 66 GTO fenders hood frame etc?

Answer

Well, I'm no expert when it comes to frame/body relations. However, I've found that one of the best places to get parts (or anything for that matter) is eBay. All you need to do is type in the year and make your looking for in the search box, and chances are you'll find someone selling what your looking for. I would also check out Hemmings.com in the parts section. Hope this helps you some.

AMES.com

The 65 to 67 frame is the same. You should also be able to use the same year Chevelle, Cutlass, etc. That being a big SHOULD. Hollander interchange guide available at most salvage yards will help with that.

What is the distributor rotation for a 1979 Pontiac 400 counterclockwise or clockwise?

The Older GTO`s Were Counterclockwise. I`m Almost Sure Yours Would Too. To Be Sure Take Off The Dist. Cap & Just Bump It Over & You Can Tell. Good Luck All of the real Pontiac, Buick & Olds V8 engines used a counterclockwise rotating distributor except for the 307 which rotated clockwise.

A bolt that is used to hold the fuel pump rod up while installing the pump for 1974 350 nova. I need a diagram location on this.?

IF YOU DONT HAVE AT LEAST 60 POUNDS OF OIL PRESSURE AT 3000RPM ,IT SOUNDS LIKE FRONT SEAL LEAK BY THE BALANCER IF ITS REALY BAD YOU DONT HAVE MUCH OIL PRESSURE AT ALL,CUASING THE CRANK AND HEADS TO BE DRY WITCH MEANS YOUR RUNNING HOT TOO,

Answermy Chevy truck did same thing after much hairpulling and changing fuel pump gaskets etc,it was the head gasket that solved the problem! Answeri would check the lower passenger side in front of the engine where the fuel pump bolts on. there usually is a bolt there that is used to hold the fuel pump rod up while installing the pump. some times that bolt becomes loose or is not replaced and it is a through hole and will leak oil. this is used to install the pump by removing the bolt and pushing the rod up ( you may have to turn the motor over so the rod goes all the way up and then install a longer bolt until the pump is bolted in )CAUTION make sure you remove the longer bolt and install the original one before starting or turning motor over! another cause could be crankcase pressure caused by blowby or not enough crank case ventilation which some times you may have to add another breather to the valve cover or check the pcv valve to see if if has adaquate vacum and or it is working properly good luck

Why a 1969 gto stalls when you press the gas?

Check the following: fuel squirt from accelerator pump circuit in Q-Jet carb, correct ignition point dwell (30 degrees), pull off vacuum hose at distributor at idle & gently suck down a vacuum; it should speed up the engine slightly- indictating that it works the advance pull; if it doesn't it's ruptured. Check base timing at idle & it should be around 8 degrees with the vacuum advance hose pulled off at the distributor. Slowly rev up the engine & watch for the timing marks to advance on the pulling while using a timing light. One thing about a nearly 40-year old distributor: the dwell should be 30 degrees at idle. Rev up the engine while a dwell meter is hooked up & see if the dwell changes more than 2-3 degrees. If it does it's worn out & should be replaced. Pontiacs were also bad about the roll pin that holds the gear onto the distributor shaft cracking & the shaft would "walk" around, changing the base timing & making it sluggish. Sometimes they'd pop & the shaft would remain stationary & the engine would quit. Hard to find & easy to fix. Onemore thing: Pontiacs were bad for timing chain wear. Place a breaker bar & socket on the balancer bolt, gently turn in the direction of normal rotation until the slack is taken up. Then also gently slowly turn the bolt backward against normal rotation & see appx how many degrees of slack you have. If it's anywhere approaching 30 degrees, then valve timing will suffer & a stumble will result. One final thought (of many): check sparkplug wires with an ohm meter. New they're about 6-7K ohms. With any time on them & high underhood temperatures they age quickly & if they're anywhere near 12K ohms or more they'll cause surging/stumbling & may crossfire. Good luck.

How is gear ratio related to torque and speed?

OK, horse power is tork in a certain amount time, dont worry about tork, in other words, if you have horse power from 2000 rpm to about 6300 rpm, and your high horse power peak is 6000 rpm you want to match your rear gear ratio at 3.00 would be close to the peak for a top speed of 152 mph, everyone talks about tork now because its politically correct, also the rear gears like 4.11 means your drive shaft turns 4.11 times to the wheels 1 time in automatic 3rd so your top speed and mileage drops, so your car will be very quick but top speed drops but unless you have slicks there is no point in the 4.11 type ratio, because you cant floor it off the line anyway, you will just burn rubber because your too close to the higher point of the power band.

How do you remove oil pan from a 1968 pondiac gto with a 350 engine?

This can be done fairly simply with a Pontiac. A lot more so than a Chevy. You need not remove the timing cover and everything associated with it like the SBC. It can be done with the engine in the car. Unbolt the motor mounts. Using a jack and a board between it and the oil pan raise the engine slightly. Make sure your fan and distributor are clearing. Insert a couple of 3 to 4 inch thick blocks between the engine and the frame mounts. Lower the engine back down. Unbolt the bolts on the pan and remove it. That's it.
