The reasons that corporations consult a corporate social responsibility consultant firm are because they truly want to be socially responsible or they want to appear to be socially responsible. Many corporations have their own internal social responsibility specialists. Most large companies have relationships with vendors of a supply chain(s). Social responsibility specialists can audit supply chain(s) to evaluate the environmental friendliness and community engagement of, not only their client corporation, but that of their supply chain(s). Social responsibility specialists can assess compliance with industry regulations, helping avoid sanctions or litigation that can increase the cost of doing business. A corporate social responsibility consultant firm can be cost effective and provide a corporation with a good public image. Both of which will please investors.
Integrity Social responsibility
Well, both life and health insurance companies are doing business but with a huge social responsibility on their shoulders.
Because the world has become flat and every person has an opportunity to see what a company is doing for the countrys their in. Companies want people to believe that they care and companies are usually then more accepted when moving into a new market.
Without social responsibility there would be no laws or culture as such. Only sociopaths feel no responsibility to their fellow humans, without that a life has no more value than a grain of sand, therefore no one would ever want to help others or even consider doing so. It is our ability to work together, aka feelings of social responsibility, that has allowed us to become the dominant predator and species on earth.
Community relations is a PR (Public Relations) function, which means it's essentially marketing the company to the community it operates in. Social responsibility has nothing to do with marketing (not that it can't or won't be marketed and used by a company seeking to enhance its community relations). SR is about doing things that actually make the community better or at the least don't harm society, such as environmentally friendly products, cleaning up any toxic pollution the company produces, or contributing to schools.
Its a type of self regulation in business. Whereby a company not only takes care of its business to make money but while doing it, take the responsibility to make sure it does not harm others and other things, for example the environment, its employees, its community etc.

Companies take a defensive stance to social responsibility by doing only what is required of them by law and nothing more. Tobacco companies are a good example, as domestically they follow the laws; placing warnings on packs, not advertising. But in countries where that is not the law, the go above and beyond to sell their products.
