An absorption spectrum can tell the astronomer or physicist what elements are in the starlight being observed. A diffraction grating is used to split the incoming light into a spectrum of colors. Sodium, for example, causes dark Fraunhofer lines at known points in the visible spectrum. Helium was discovered in the solar spectrum by Bunsen and Kirchoff using this technique. Hence the name derived from Helios for the Sun.

Each element will radiate at a set of specific discreet frequencies, and the frequencies they radiate tell us what the element is, and how deeply ionized it is. But there IS one thing that the spectrum cannot tell us; is this a normal matter star, or an anti-matter star?
The light from stars can tell us what type of star it is (our Sun is a G type), the stars spectrum can tell us what elements are in the star, and its intristic brightness can help us determine how far away it is. Also, if there is a wobble in the star, or a change it the stars brightness can tell us if it has a planet.

Light is a spectrum. On one end it is red and the other blue. We see light in this spectrum as waves and if it is blue, the object is coming toward us. If the waves are red than it is moving away. The frequency of these waves tell us how fast and object is moving toward or away from us.
