Could be many things, I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, with the exact same problem, Ive tested wires and switches, and from what I can see, I believe the cause is the door buzzer.. I removed it, and the info I have gathered the wiring for the door locks goes through the buzzer and buzzer relay, if your door chime/buzzer isn't working that may be the culprit. you can try cleaning the connections on the relay or the buzzer itself. also the wires in the door jam temd to break as well, so you may want to remove the rubber boot and check the wires there as well.
Good Luck
It is either a Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, or Wrangler. The model codes are xj, wj, and tj.
Either is OK
Either 2 or 3
Frame rail on either the driver or passenger side.
My '96 Cherokee Sport does, so I bet a '98 does.
The grand Cherokee is a body style, sport is a trim package that is used on all jeep models(wrangler, Cherokee, grand Cherokee, patriot, ...)
Sounds like you belt came off.
