I'd check the alternator. It might have a problem maintaining brush contact at high speed.
If your check engine light is flashing that means an engine cylinder misfire has been detected

The theromstat is in the hose that is connected to the engine. It will have about 3 or 4 bolts, you need metric tools for it.

On the 1996 Ford Taurus GL : The 3.0 litre " Vulcan " V6 engine is an Over Head Valve / pushrod design engine ( I believe you could get an optional engine , which was the 3.0 litre " Duratec " V6 engine which is a DOHC design )

Either the 3.0 liter VULCAN engine or the 3.0 liter DURATEC engine
If you are swapping the Vulcan OHV engine, it will work without issue. If you are attempting to swap the Duratec DOHC engine, it will bolt in, but the computer will not be capable of running the engine.
The thread on cap on your engine coolant reservoir is your pressure cap / radiator cap ( 16 PSI ) on a 1996 Ford Taurus ( all engines )
