- just talk about his interests
- watch movies
- go on a "field trip" around your yard or neighborhood
- hide items around the yard or house for a "mystery hunt"
- talk about future dreams
- talk about "if you could live anywhere in the world what would life there be like?"
Pre-teens and teens enjoy challenges and solving problems. They like to show their mastery (such as beating a parent during a Board Game like Scrabble). They still like to use their imaginations, though "daydreaming" is often punished in schools; allow them to verbalize their "daydreams" at home. And although kids like Video Games, it is better to do interactive activities that you can do with your child. The worst thing a parent of a 13-year old can hear is "I'm bored!" So, give ideas or ask your child about activities that are of interest to them.
