It is advisable to stick to soft foods so it is easier for the cat to "chew" and swallow. Mushed up wet food, or even mixing water to wet food is usually taken quite well if the cat is particularly fussy about the texture and softness.

Cats are carnivores so they derive all the nutrients from meat, so it makes sense to find a food with a high (50% or over) meat content. This should be the FIRST ingredient (listed as Chicken, Turkey, Lamb, Tuna, etc.). Foods that are free of grains, corns, and wheat gluten are highly recommended as these are cheap "filler" that bulk up foods - but have no nutritional value for a cat.

It is may be a good idea to avoid hard foods such as biscuits. Without teeth a cat cannot crunch such hard pieces and will just swallow them whole which could become a choking hazard.
