Not for amateurs

Straight away that I must first warn you that chemical hair straightening is definitely not something that you'll want to try at home. Even most hairstylists will leave this one to "straitening specialists". Most often the chemicals used can very damaging if not applied under carefully controlled conditions.

Healthy hair can take a most forms of straightening without harm. However, previously colored or chemically damaged hair can experience even more damaged and suffer from some serious long term damage issues. All that being said chemical straightening is pretty successful, albeit expensive for the higher end techniques.

Here is a quick rundown on your options:

Longest lasting (until it has been cut off)

Thermal reconditioning is the preference for women with bulky, loose to medium (but not kinky) curls. A solution containing a chemical that breaks the molecules that maintains the curl in the hair shaft is applied; let set, then rinsed, blow-dried, and carefully flat-ironed. Once a neutralizer is put on, the hair will be locked into this new, straight shape. The process can take several hours. But remember you'll have very few styling options as your hair won't respond to curling irons or blow dryers thus eliminating many of the styles you have been used to Cost: $500 to $1,500.

Lasts two to four months

Treatments, like Brazilian straightening and Keratin treatments, help the surface of the cuticle lay down but don't permanently break the molecular structure of the hair shaft, so your natural curl will gradually return. These treatments can be done on color-treated hair and are effective on everything from waves to tight curls; they will control frizz but maintain some texture and volume. You will need to blow-dry your hair straight, the process will require less effort. Cost: $300 to $600.

Lasting till next shampoo

I love Paul Mitchell's relaxing treatment for curly hair, thick hair that needs form and movement and out-of-control waves. Cost $17.
