The Grand Canyon was formed when the uplift of the Rocky mountains raised the inland sea that occupied the Great Plains region. As the water rushed westward, it was of such velocity it began to carve the rocks as it strove to the fledgling Pacific Ocean. This, combined by a long period of excessive rainfall, gradually wore down the rocks and created one of the modern wonders of the world.
