The Roman Empire was fatally weakened by a series of civil wars in which different people competed to become the new Cesar. The immense corruption of the empire also resulted in a great loss of patriotic sentiment. It was difficult or impossible for most Roman citizens even to care whether their corrupt empire survived or fell. Therefore, it was relatively easy for invading barbarians to overthrow the empire.
