Most od the deaths were the result of a mudflow, called a lahar.
Around 2,500 deaths were caused by the most serious eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in 1985. The town of Armero was covered in a mass of mud and debris (or lahar) which the volcano produced.
The government declared the site of the buried city to be a "holy ground" and tourism has increased in the area.
There was a relatively small eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz (central Colombia) on November 13, 1985, but it released huge quantities of glacial ice and water, forming 4 extremely large mudflows, or lahars. These powerful mudflows obliterated the small town of Armero, and part of the town of Chinchina, resulting on the deaths of more than 23,000 people. It is the worst natural disaster in Colombia's history.
There are five villages within 45 kilometers of the volcano, Nevado Del Ruiz, sometimes called Mount Ruiz, in Colombia. * Villamaria * Manizales * Herveo * Villa Hermosa * El Libano. None of the villages are on a river or canyon from the volcano, so they were not affected by lahars. They were all affected by falling ash. There is also a large town, Armero, 74 kilometers away on the Lagunillas River, where 23,000 people were killed by lahars, or volcanic mudflows from the November 1985 eruption. The town was destroyed.
The top five deadliest volcanoes in recorded history are Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which erupted in 1815 killing an estimated 71,000 people; Krakatoa in Indonesia, which erupted in 1883 causing at least 36,000 deaths; Mount Pelee in Martinique, which erupted in 1902 resulting in approximately 30,000 fatalities; Nevado del Ruiz in Colombia, which erupted in 1985 causing around 23,000 deaths; and Mount Unzen in Japan, which erupted in 1792 resulting in around 15,000 fatalities.
Armero tragedy happened in 1985.
