Many working class people rioted for almost five days in the city and 20,000 troops, recalled from Gettysburg were sent to New York to end the riots which cost 1,200 lives, mostly Black men, in the racially charged city. Troops had to use howitzer cannons to help end the riots. As an aside, New York City was a Democrat led city, and their love for President Lincoln, a Republican, was small.
