Our knowledge of the spread of Christianity is fragmentary. However, we do have evidence that indicates how Christianity came to a couple of cities in Gaul (modern France), namely the cities of Lugdunum and Vienna (modern Lyon and Vienne).

It is likely that it reached these cities by a rather circuitous trade route. This arose from the trade contact between the province of Asia (on the western side of Anatolia - modern Turkey) and the province of Gaul, via the Mediterranean and the River Rhone, on which river these two cities were located.

We know about the Christians in these two cities because there was a terrible attack on them in 177, and the survivors wrote a letter to the Christians in Asia about it. This letter was preserved by Eusebius in his Ecclesiastical History. The bishop of Lyon died during this period of persecution, and we know that his successor, Irenaeus, actually came from the province of Asia. Irenaeus also came to be an important Christian writer, from whom we learn much about the early Christian era.
