The slight tapping was pre-ignition detonation or dieseling. In other words, the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder was exploding from the heat of being compressed. It was exploding BEFORE the spark plug lit off. After an extended amount of time, you can burn a valve or knock a hole in the top of a piston. Look at the owners manual. Find out what your compression ratio is. If it's higher than 9.0 to 1 (9:1) you must run 89 octane gasoline. If your compression ratio exceeds 9.5:1 you must run 91 octane gasoline. 10:1 or higher you should be burning 93 octane gasoline. The loss of power and rough running is indicative of traumatic engine damage. You may have melted a spark plug if you're lucky. Loosen the plug wires THEN start the engine. One at a time, pull a spark plug boot off to see if the engine idle worsens. If not, that cylinder is faulty. If the idle worsens, then that cylinder is firing.
