It's broken. On earlier ones (prior to 1993 or so) the front gearset goes bad due to inadequate lubrication and if it goes, the car won't move at all.

it is mounted on top of your transmission to the shift shaft have someone move the shifter in the car and look for a cable moving back and forth. under this cable you will see switch

remove engine....move...replace engine
check the transmission fluid first
There could be two reasons for this. The first is the transmission is completely out and the second is the linkage in the transmission is broken.
There clearly is a problem with your transmission
There's a small sensor on the transmission that the size of a spark plug.It's on the driver side of the transmission near the shift linkage
The gauge does not cause the heat; it only shows what it is.
