But it will start when in park? If that's the case you probably have a bad transmission clutch solenoid. You can by-pass the problem by unplugging the plug that goes into the front of your transmission, but your gas mileage will go way down.
Check for leaks in the intake manifold or a poor fuel pressure situation.
with me it was the o2 censer
Your Chevrolet Cavalier 97 might stall when going downhill because it has a bad fuel filter. It could also be the spark plugs misfiring.
Had a 1995 Cavalier with a similar problem. It was some type of solenoid on the transmission (automatic). Cost about $500 to replace at the dealer.
There could be a couple causes . The first would be the oxygen censor isn't working properly and the other is the coil pack is probably going out.
It needs a tune-up.
fuel filter
it sounds like ur clutch went out in it.
No, it will just stall and cease to run.
Check your spark plugs and leads.
If you mean each time you engage car in any gear forward or reverse & it immediately stalls - you have a bad torque converter. Start engine, put foot on brake, put car in NEUTRAL, if it DOES NOT stall, but it does stall if you repeat this test when you put car in drive or reverse = bad torque converter - It's called a "stall test"
Stall speed RPMs for the A140E transaxle [automatic 4 speed ] are 2450 +/- 150 RPMs in D position, brake engaged, as shown in overhaul manual.
