That's pretty broad... many things could make this happen, from head gaskets being blown to bad oil.
What color is the smoke? Did the car make any sounds? Did you notice any difference in performance at any point leading up to the breakdown?
To get the best answer, give a very concise, specific question. List as many details as you can about what happened, especially when it comes to something mechanical since there are so many variables at work.

YES
to blow out the smoke the car produced
its getting ready to explode. jump out quick
white smoke can be either your car overheating, or smoke from an electrical issue
Black smoke from an engine is caused by unburnt fuel.
a blow piston or a head gasket in your engine
the smoke comes out the rear of the car in a pipe. the smoke comes out only when the engine is on. you do not have to be moving to have smoke come out. just the fact that the engine is on creates smoke due to the byproduct of the fuel and energy.
condensation
high miles, try going to auto zone and getting some stop smoke, it's an oil aditive
A blown head gasket
A dead short to ground.
White smoke = Coolant leak, head gasket is the likely culprit. Blue smoke = Engine burning oil. Black smoke = Engine running too rich, wasting fuel.
