What causes a computer to turn off randomly and set the date back to when you got it?

The date reset is probably due to a faulty (or worn out) CMOS battery (a button battery on your computer's mother board that keeps voltage supply to the internal clock- you don't really need it unless of course you want your clock to run correctly 8some programs that are demo versions use the date to define when the demo runs out and might object to having a broken system clock...) The random reboot could be due to any of a very large number of causes:
- virus
- program crashes
- hardware failure
- dll missmatches
