It could be a number of things like air tanks full of water, air lines frozen if you are in a cold climate, bad regulator, big enough air leaks to keep it from building pressure, clogged dryer/dryer filter needs to be changed,or it may need an unload-er rebuild depending on the type of compressor. A lot of times the compressor itself isn't bad but is one of the problems I mentioned. If you have taken the main line off the compressor and know for a fact it isn't pumping then it may need a rebuild. A lot of times when they go bad the compressor will pass oil through the air lines from oil getting by the compressor piston. If theres oil in the main line then positively you need a new one/rebuild. As for an exact, blunt answer, it stops pumping from worn out parts. Theres nothing specific that just makes them quit pumping. Hope this helps,I tried to be thorough.
Bad head gasket or cylinder head. Suggest to check air compressor before working on the head.
The air conditioning compressor pressurizes the refrigerant sending it through a series of chambers. This compressor is normally called a centrifugal compressor.
