If you're talking about dinosaurs and prehistoric animals, then the ice age or a commet wiped them out. Animals are extinct or endangered because of habitat loss and poaching (illegally hunting protected animals). Extinction is when a species, and it's offspring, are wiped out completely. This can be from mass extinctions from things like asteroids and comets hitting the Earth. Other ways of extinction include when Death Rate exceeds the birth rates in a species and the species finally dies out. Other ways that an animal species becomes extinct is through being hunted by poachers, eg: the Javan rhinoceros, or their homland being destroyed, eg: the rainforest, or by their type of food becoming more scarce.
