It is cause by genetics, mutations, and even errors in the cell cycle. Sometimes when a mutation occurs in the replication of DNA, it causes certain genes to stop functioning the way they should. Say for example, that the gene affected is a gene that encodes for a protein or enzyme that regulates the cell cycle and keeps it from going past certain checkpoints (like in G1 or G2). If the cell can't stop at these checkpoints, then it will just keep dividing. Sun protection and smoking are just other ways mutations can occur.
