it sounds like the cv joint went dry. the cv joint is at the end of the axle and is covered by a rubber boot. if the boot gets torn or puntured you will lose the lubricant and the joint will go bad. to fix this the cv joint must be replaced, and it is not a diy for the average backyard mech. good luck JD If it sounds more like metal on metal sound, then it is the strut mounts and boots...or lack there of.
