Most likely is knocking. Try next higher octane grade of gasoline.
SOUNDS LIKE THE ENGINE IS OVERHEATING, HOW OLD IS IT ??? ARE ANY OF THE DASH WARNING LIGHTS ON??? COULD ALSO BE THAT YOUR PLUGS NEED BADLY TO BE CHANGED , YOUR GETTING SPARK NOCK, DOES IT DO IT WORSE WHEN YOUR GOING UP HILL AND TRYING TO ACCILERATE??? WHAT YEAR AND WHAT MAKE??? ASK THE QUESTION AGAIN WITH MORE INFORMATION.
You did not say what engine you had, so if it is a stock motor depending on the year and the compression it could be bad or low octane gas. if you are using good gas, try backing the timing down till doesn't knock under accelloration or under a load as in going up hill.
The CV joint being loose is one of the main causes for a car shaking while it is going uphill. However, a faulty AC and faulty engine could also be the problem.
I own an 02 Highlander, and sometimes I get a knock when engine is under load, like going up a hill or when accelerating. This is engine knock caused by low octane gas. When I use a mid grade or premium octane, I do not get the sound at all. .
owners manual say it could be normal, but carbon on pistons from my experience also cause knocking, when I remove carbon knocking stops,I have corolla with 1nze engine.
This is a vacuum issue, as your demand on the engine increases (power to climb the hill) so does the vacuum created by the engine by increased acceleration...this causes the vacuum operated controls in the airbox to switch position.
gravityGRAVITY
The downshift causes the engine to turn at a slower rate. This causes the wheels of the car and the engine to be more similar and gives more of an emphasis on producing power versus a top speed which is achieved in a higher gear. Alternate answer: An internal combustion engine only develops power when it is turning between a narrow band of revs. usually between 3000 and 6000 rpm on the average car. The hill puts a heavy load on the engine and causes it to slow down. Shifting to a lower gear (actually a higher gear ratio), allows the engine to speed up and develop more power to cope with the hill.
Maybe hill is at right angle?
If a 1994 Trooper loses power going up hill and has a spark knock in the engine, the compression of the engine should be checked. It is possible that the vehicle is not running on all of its cylinders.
The engine size should not matter when going down a hill, as long as you dont put it in too low of a gear and over rev your engine.
