I just had this problem! I've listed the answers in likelihood of them being your problem...

1) Your low on Transmission Fluid. If you have a transmission leak this is probably your problem. Add some fluid.

2) You having too MUCH fluid. You'll have to drain some out.

3) Your transmission fluid could be too old or (in my case) some idiot put the wrong transmission fluid in your car. Either way you need your transmission flushed. It costs about $100 and just about any shop can do it.

4) Your transmission vent is clogged but that is very unlikely.

Good luck!

What happens if you overfill the automatic transmission fluid?

Depends upon the model of transmission. On some, it is no big deal, on others, the fluid will foam and possibly shoot out of the filler tube. Others, it will cause the transmission to slip and possible overheat.

How does foam turn sound into heat?

Sound is a vibration travelling through the air. When it hits foam, it causes the foam to vibrate, which in turn causes friction. The friction causes heat.

What could cause the transmission fluid in a 1998 Chevy Tahoe to look foamy on the dipstick?

Low fluid level could be one cause, more likely condensate from extreme temperature conditions or a missing dipstick. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID WILL LOOK FOAMY IF CHECKED WHEN WARM. THIS IS NORMAL. YOU SHOULD HAVE A QUALIFIED TECH INSP/CHANGE THE FLUID IF IT HAS NOT BEEN DONE IN THE LAST 30K MILES ANSWER Some oil additives have been known to 'foam'. So if you added an additive to your tranny that could also be a cause. ANSWER Sure there is not some water into the trensmission?. Get qualified help to inspect.

What happens when you overfill the transmission?

The fluid will start to foam and leak through the filler tube were your dipstick is located. It may also cause seals and gaskets to leak. If accidentally overfilled, drain some by removing the plug.

How do you add transmission fluid to your '92 5-speed Geo?

Assuming this is an automatic transmission, the transmission dipstick tube is where you would add transmission fluid. After a drive and the engine and transmission are warmed up, put transmission in the park position, apply parking brake, leave engine running, exit vehicle, open hood, locate and remove transmission dipstick, wipe dipstick dry, reinsert dipstick completely into tube and remove again. Notice the level of fluid left on the dipstick, it should be within the marks indicated. Add the proper fluid as required thru the dipstick tube if needed. If this vehicle has a standard transmission the fill plug would be located under the vehicle directly on the transmission. This would best be done on a lift. With vehicle up on a lift and level remove the fill plug from the side of the transmission. The fluid should be right at that level of the openning, add the proper fluid if necessary.

Why are bubbles in automatic transmission fluid?

Air Bubbles in Transmission FluidThere is usually one of two causes for air bubbles in transmission fluid. First, your transmission fluid level may be too low. A low level of transmission fluid will cause the pump to suck up air with the transmission fluid and the result will be air bubbles or foam seen in the transmission fluid when checked on the dipstick. The second most common cause for air bubbles in the fluid is that there may be too much transmission fluid in the tranmission. Too much fluid in the transmission pan can be remedied by draining out some of the fluid. Some vehicles do have drain plugs like an oil pan, but with most vehicles you will have to remove the transmission pan to lower the level of fluid. If your vehicle does not have a drain plug and you plan to remove the pan to lower the fluid level, you may as well change the transmission fluid and replace the transmission filter. Or if you don't want to do it yourself, take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop and have them do the fluid and filter change for you. On most vehicles, changing the transmission fluid and filter is not a difficult task. If you do notice air bubbles in your transmission fluid, make sure you take action immediately as either of the causes above can quickly cause severe wear to your transmission parts.
