When I was a kid, we would punch each other in the thigh causing a sharp pain which we called Charley Horses. The term can also be applied to a similar pain, but this being caused by cramping of the leg muscle instead of being punched.
An over exertion of a muscle causes a charlie horse. Charlie horses mostly occur in the calves of your legs. It is the muscles locking. It should hurt for a little while maybe a day or two but in most cases no more than that.
