Its possible a wire has worn off near the shifter inside the console.I owned the same car and had a problem with the car slipping out of overdrive for a moment, after hitting a slight bump when i would drive down the highway.I managed to talk to a Hyundai tech and he stated to me that the overdrive wire would succumb to vibration and rubbing over time.I never did fix it.I ended up trading it on a 5 spd elantra.I do now own a another 01 accent with a 5 spd and i would advise trying to pick up one of these. They are great cars, they are at this time very inexpensive, you lose the lazy shift characteristics of the auto and the manual is ultra low maintenance and very dependable. It might be worth your while to walk into a Hyundai dealership and find a parts person and/or tech to talk to regarding your problem. Some are often willing to help, others are not,but its likely they will know what your dealing with. These cars have been around for along time and they will know the most likely cause.

You should just pull the shifter into the "3" position and it will never shift into overdrive.

On the end of your gear selector lever ( PRN etcetera ) is the transmission control switch . Overdrive is the normally allowed position , but when you turn the overdrive off ( the O/D OFF light will light up just above and to the right of the speedometer and if you have the digital dash it will show " overdrive off " to the right of the speed indicator )
