Hemiparesis(hem-ee-pah-REE-sis) is a slight paralysis or weakness affecting one side of the body. ( contrast hemiparesis with hemiplegia.
Paralysis is typically associated with stroke. Anyone experiencing any degree of paralysis should seek immediate medical attention.
ANY part ... up to and including the whole thing. (For what it is worth, my stroke affected only the sensory strip associated with my left side, thus the stroke occurred on the right side and slightly posterior to the vertical mid-line of my brain.)
Bells Palsy is a facial paralysis normally affecting one side of the face can last a few weeks or a year Bell's Palsy is facial paralysis, normally affecting one side of the face, and can last from a number of weeks to a number of years.
Weakness in one half of your body is called as hemiparalysis or hemiparesis. It is usually caused by blood supply related problem to internal capsule of the brain.
paralysis
Paralysis is a general term that encompasses numeral medical conditions with inability to control muscle function (one or more muscles). In many cases the term is used for a flaccid paralysis of a limb or limbs. However, paralysis can be spastic (the paralyzed muscles are in the state of contraction and/or experience regular or irregular spasms). Nevertheless, all types of paralysis indicated loss of voluntary control over muscle(s). A medical condition with INCOMPLETE loss of control (diminished ability to control muscles remains) is called PARESIS. Examples of paralysis and paresis include: 1. Quadriplegia and Quadriparesis (loss of control of the muscles in all four limbs). In most cases, it is caused by a trauma or severe disease affecting the spinal cord on the cervical (neck) level or above; 2. Hemiplegia and Hemiparesis (loss of control of the muscles on one side of the body, e.g. left arm and left leg OR right arm and right leg). In most cases, it is caused by a stroke (bleeding or blockage in the brain) in the left or right hemisphere, where the opposite side of the body is affected. 3. Paraplegia and Paraparesis (loss of control of the muscles in both legs). In most cases, it is caused by a trauma or severe disease of the spinal cord in the thoracic (upper back) or lumbar (lower back) areas. 4. Facial paralysis and paresis (loss of control of the facial muscles). In most cases, it is caused by the damage to the facial nerve (one of the cranial nerves) or central nervous system due to trauma or disease. Most commonly, this condition affects only one side of the face, e.g. Bell's Palsy. There are many other types of pareses and paralyses, most well known of which is Cerebral palsy. This is just a general overview of the meaning of this medical term.
When a small stroke, resulting in a partial paralysis of the left side, occurs the damage area is most likely in the right side of the brain. This is not always true but in most cases is true
If the stroke occurs in the left side of the brain, the right side of the body will be affected, producing some or all of the following: paralysis on the right side of the body; speech/language problems; slow, cautious behavioral style; memory loss. A stroke on the right side of the brain affects the left side of the body.
If there is paralysis on the right side of the body then he will know that the left hemisphere was affected and trouble with the left side of the body means the right hemisphere is affected. The brain is cross wired!
Stroke typically creates paralysis. It is normally restricted to one side of the body.
Paralysis on one side of the body can indicate a stroke. Pervasive numbness on only one side of the body is also bad. Go see a doctor immediatly
Spassky is still alive but suffered a rather serious stroke in 2010 that reportedly left him with some right side paralysis.
If this just occurred, call for assistance and get to a hospial immediately. This is often a sign of a stroke
The term for total paralysis of one side of the body is hemiplegia, while a weakness on one side of the body is hemiparesis.Hemiparesis: One-sided paralysis of the body.Hemiplegia is the word for half paralysis.
Hemiplegia is almost always caused by brain damage on the side opposite the paralysis, often from a stroke.
It is important to distinguish between Todd's paralysis and a stroke, because the treatments are quite different.
