The year, make, model and engine info would help but in general it could be a vacuum leak or time for a tune up.
A 350 engine will idle good but cut out and run rough while driving if there is a vacuum leak. This causes too much air to enter the engine under load.
What causes a car to idle good and run rough when you give it gas?
no.
good chance the cam and crank shafts were not aligned properly or the engine just needs to be timed correctly
accelerator ping is caused by to low aoctane fuel you are using this can be easliy corrected by buying higher octane,or by having a "good: mechanic ,tune your engine to the octane rating you are using
I have a problem. I just bought a used 1995 Kawasaki 220 Bayou. The engine started running a little rough at first. Kept getting worse and then started backfiring through the exhaust. I had the carbeurator rebuilt but still runs rough and backfires. Cranks good and idles good. What could be my problem? Thanks
It means the Fuel/Air mixture is not correct. Too lean means the mixture has too much air and not enough fuel. If the engine idles rough but runs good under acceleration, suspect a leaking vacuum hose. If the engine runs perfectly suspect a defective MAF sensor.
I have a 99 and had a nasty squeal that would be intermittant upon acceleration, I changed the belts (upper and lower) and used Gatorbacks (belts by Goodyear), and the squeal is gone.. Don't know if this is the problem or not, but it will only cost you about 50 bucks and hour worth of your time to find out. Good luck!
There can be many causes of a rough idle. But if the engine runs good under acceleration and then idles rough, there are 2 things I would look at. First look to see if you have a vacuum hose disconnected, broken, or cracked. Secondly depending on the make and model, check the EGR valve. This is just the main 2 causes as there are more. -also rotor and distributor cap arcing - use only original dealer parts -O2 sensor slow - if it is old replace -ignition wires old or incorrectly routed -if gas smell do a fuel pressure leak-down test - should hold 50psi for 10 mins or more. May be pressure regulator or line leaking or bad fuel pump
Depending on the gears used, it can run as fast as you want, dont expect good acceleration tho, unless the gear ratio is ment for acceleration and not speed.
a good answer would be He had a really rough week
It may have worn spark plugs and or bad spark plug wires, time for a good tune up.
