I think that the first answer is pretty well spot on. I would however like to add to it. Man, as himself, as an individual, is basically carnally minded. The gospel leads man away from that which seems to come naturally to him, that of worldly things, and places him on the pathway which leads to Heavenly riches. It is unfortunate that man fails to recognise these riches in his life already bestowed upon him because he has so far rejected the temptations of the world. He has failed to see that God grants us certain riches little by little, here a little there a little. If we eat the correct foods (God given) we are blessed with good health. If we obey a righteous law we remain free and at liberty to lead good lives. God has, in His wisdom, chosen for all of us a worthwhile mate who will aid us in raising a family.
These blessings soon become mundane, and so we seek after that which is new and exciting to our carnal mind, thus causing us to leave behind that which we have already been blessed with. We seek after the freedom which religion seems to keep us from by the restrictions it places upon our lives. So in our desire for worldly things we pore out the accumulted oil from our lamps and walk into a world of blindingly lit quamire of filthiness.
