There are a number of conditions that can cause a stinging sensation when urinating; some are more common than others. The usual diagnosis would be either a urinary tract infection (UTI) orcystitis Both of these conditions are caused mainly by the bacteria E.Coli which enters the urethra and bladder and causes irritation. This can usually be cleared up by antibiotics within a few days and is usually not serious. However, should the bacteria travel to the kidneys, this can cause much greater problems. This is why it is important to drink plenty of fluids during the day and urinate regularly.
Other less common conditions that can cause stinging while urinating are kidney stones, vulvadynia, urethritis, female urethral syndrome, vaginitis and several sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, herpes and gonorrhea.
It is important to have a urinalysis performed by a doctor. An initial dip stick test will show the presence of protein, sugar, blood, white blood cells and nitrates. Further anaylsis will allow for bacterial cultures to be made. This allows doctors to find the specific condition causing the pain.
