The "Check engine" light or CEL, is often referred to a "Malfunction Indicator Light" or MIL. This light comes on to alert the operator that the engine is damaged or is not performing to factory set standards. If the ECU, otherwise known as "electronic control unit" or "Electronic control module (ECM)" is getting incorrect feedback from one of the many various sensors it will turn on the MIL. The sensor that is out of range may be reporting a problem, or could be the problem itself. An automotive code reader can be purchased to determine the cause of the MIL, however, frequently the code reader can only tell the technician the reason the MIL was turned on in the first place. Often the check engine code is misinterpreted as a bad sensor. A qualified technician should be consulted before attempting any repair, as incorrect diagnosis could possibly occur.

It is probably your EGR valve causing the check engine light. I recently bought a used 1997 Toyota Celica and had this exact problem. The new valve cost approximately $85 and fixed the problem right away.
Is this a trick question? My answer is "there is no problem". It Depends on the code that will detrmined what the problem was. or what ever you fix it with was the problem
I work in the auto parts business and you need to take it to a mechanic so he can run a diagnostic check and tell you exactly what is making the light come on.
you must remove the grill and the bezel that surrounds the light.
