If the Emissions Controls are screwed up, take it to your dealer or BMW mechanic. (You are a member of AAA or have tow insurance through your car insurance, don't you?). The mechanic can tell what is wrong by the scan codes. It is probably some sensor somewhere, or a clogged fuel filter from a bad tank of gas. It may still be covered by warrantee (some of the emissions equipment is warranteed longer than the other stuff). They also sell Scan tools at auto parts stores for around $150 if you want to figure it out yourself. It plugs in above the driver's left foot. Look the error codes up on the internet. The ScanGauge II is a Code Reader that can stay plugged in and also lets you see what the different readings are from the various bazillion fuel-injection related sensors as you drive. You can set it to any four at a time (intake temperature, gas mileage, throttle position, engine advance, etc.). It helps you improve your gas mileage, or monitor any troublesome systems. It can be moved from car-to-car, too.
