What causes the dome light to stay 'on' in my 2004 Ford Taurus and how do you fix it?

It could be that the plunger in the door (that turns the light on and off) is broke. Or it could that somehow the switch (at the headlight control) is turned on. Is there a separate switch at the light itself that could be on? If all else fails, yank the bulb.
There is no door plunger style switches on the Taurus / Sables.
Ford uses a different door ajar sensor, since at least 1996.
