Answer 1The white smoke is basically the same as you breating out in cold weather. It is warm air hitting cold air that makes it visible. The "smoke" is is CONDENSED WATER VAPOR, which is a byproduct of the fuel combustion process. The key is the presence of WATER VAPOR MOLECULES [too small to see, and therefore invisible]in the vehicle exhaust gasses that upon contact with the cold air, condense into water DROPLETS which ARE VISIBLE. Another well known example of this phenomenon is airplane "contrails," which occur at very high altitudes, and very cold temperatures. Most young folks think this is due to "jet" planes, but any piston engine aircraft will produce contrails at the right ambient temperatures. To see this, pay attention to high altitude bomber scenes in WWII movies, like "12 O'clock High" as one example.

What causes white smoke when you accelerate a little hard on a 1993 Toyota Corona AT when you bought it in November of 2006 and there is no white smoke while idling?

Hello, This could be cause by a couple of things, it could be the piston rings are getting tired (Whats is the mileage on the vehicle?) or the valve seals are getting also old letting oil pass trough it and burning when getting in the combustion chamber. White smoke is caused by oil entering the combustion chamber (Burning oil creates white smoke when burnt.)

Why does aircooled engine blow white smoke?

White smoke will come out of a vehicle's exhaust system when the engine is cold. This is because of condensation build up in the engine and exhaust. The white smoke should go away after several minutes of idling. If you engine is always blowing white smoke, regardless of temperature, then it might be burning oil. Check the levels of your engine oil and your transmission fluid (if you have an automatic) and have the engine compression checked for blow-by.
