Yellow fever is a virus usually spread my mosquitos in tropical areas of the world. The virus multiplies and spreads through the lymphatic system in the body and affects the liver cells to cause destruction of the cells. This causes a buildup of bilirubin, a highly pigmented substance which accumulates in the body to causes jaundice at levels above 2, causing the body to turn pale to deep golden yellow. Nausea, vomiting, and itching are commonly seen . Left untreated (no specific treatment, usually only supportive care) the virus may progress to cause internal hemorrhage, slow heartbeat, and has a 50% mortality rate at this phase of toxicity. Unlike malaria which can be treated with medications, the best approach for yellow fever lies in preventive yellow fever vaccination.
