The Magoi (Latin: magi, sing:magus) were a west Iranian tribe who provided the priests for the west Iranian people. After the region adopted the Zoroastrian religion (from eastern Iran), the Magi became the priests for the new faith. Thus, the Magi had lived in west Iran for centuries, and had been the priestly tribe of Zoroastrianism since around the eighth century BCE. Because of their learning and skills, the name magibecame synonymous with 'wise men'.
