The word "cereal" comes from Demeter's Latin name, Ceres. We tend to think of cereal as the breakfast food that is sugar coated and comes in a box with a prize. But the word literally means "a grain used for food" or "the grass which produces as grain used for food". Demeter was the goddess of the Harvest, Grains and was responsible for the fertility of the soil. Grains were particularly important, especially in Rome, because they were used to make bread, a tremendous staple.
